Business card templates for contractors and cleaning crews

A trade card is handed over with dirty hands, at a doorstep, usually while somebody is deciding whether to trust you with a key. It goes on a fridge door or into a kitchen drawer and waits there for months. These layouts are built for that wait: a name you can read at arm's length, a licence number where an inspector expects it, and a back left clear enough to write a quote on.

12 layouts drawn for site work

Half of them carry construction wording, half carry cleaning wording. Every line is placeholder copy of realistic length — swap in your own crew and the spacing holds.

The licence line is not optional in California

A licensed contractor advertising in this state has to show the CSLB number, and a business card counts as advertising. Homeowners have been trained by the board's own outreach to look for it, so burying it in six-point grey at the bottom edge defeats the purpose twice over. Every layout here reserves a line for it beside the phone number, at the same weight as the email address.

If you hold more than one classification, list the one the customer is buying. A card that reads "B — General Building" sells a remodel; a card listing four classifications reads as a broker. The other numbers belong on the estimate, not on a three-and-a-half-inch card.

The back is worth more than the front

Trade cards get written on. An arrival window, a part number, a price for the second bathroom — the customer wants that in your handwriting, not typed. Order the back blank or with nothing but a faint rule, and order the stock uncoated: a ballpoint skates off a gloss card and a Sharpie bleeds through a thin one.

The second-best use of the back is a service list nobody has to phone about. Four items with a middot between them is the limit at this size; the fifth one always turns out to be the job you did not want anyway.

What belongs on a trade card

In the order a homeowner reads it, which is not the order most cards are laid out in.

  • The trade, in plain words — "Drain and sewer" beats "Plumbing solutions" on a doorstep.
  • One phone number. Two numbers on a card means the customer calls neither.
  • The CSLB licence number, legible, next to the contacts.
  • Service area by neighbourhood, not by county — "Sun Valley, Burbank, North Hollywood".
  • Insurance status if you carry it: "Licensed · Bonded · Insured" is three words that close jobs.
  • A blank back, or a back with one faint rule and the words "Next visit".

What a box of cards costs

Crews buy cards by the truck, not by the person: one box in each glovebox, one at the counter, one in the estimate folder. The ladder below is the real price at each step.

Questions we get asked

Where should the licence number go?
Beside the contact block, at the same size as the email address. It is a legal requirement for licensed trades advertising in California and a trust signal for the customer, so treating it as fine print works against you on both counts.
Which stock takes a ballpoint?
Uncoated cover. Ink dries into the fibre instead of sitting on a sealed surface, so a written arrival time stays readable. Silk and gloss cards smear; soft-touch holds a greasy fingerprint like a police kit.
Can the same layout become a fridge magnet?
Yes. Open the design in the studio, switch the size to the magnet card, and rebuild only the type — the magnet is the piece that survives the drawer, and it is the reason a plumber gets called two winters later.
Our logo came from the truck wrap. Can we use it?
Not at this size. Wrap artwork is drawn to read across a parking lot: at 3.5 × 2 inches those outlines close up and the card shows a dark blob. Rebuild the mark for the card — the studio will show you where it stops resolving.
