UV Printing in North Hollywood: What the Flatbed Can Actually Do for You

North Hollywood is about ten minutes down Lankershim from our door, and we get a steady stream of work from it — theater lobbies and box-office signage off Magnolia, wall pieces for studios and post houses, menu boards and patio signs from the restaurants around the Arts District, and a lot of one-off panels for people who need something on a wall by the weekend. Nearly all of it comes in under the same phrase: UV printing.
The trouble is that the phrase covers two unrelated jobs. Half the people who say it mean printing directly onto a rigid sheet — acrylic, aluminum composite, foam — instead of printing on paper or vinyl and sticking it down. The other half mean the raised, glossy varnish on a business card. Both are UV printing, both live on the same page of our site, and they have almost nothing to do with each other in production. This is how we sort it out on the phone before anybody sends a file.
What the UV part actually refers to
In conventional printing the ink is wet when it leaves the head and it dries by soaking into the paper or by the solvent evaporating. Neither works on a sheet of acrylic. There is nothing to soak into and nothing to evaporate off.
UV ink does not dry, it cures. It is a liquid that hardens when a UV lamp passes over it, and that happens in the same pass as the printing, within a fraction of a second of the droplet landing. Two things follow from that. First, the ink sits on the surface as a thin cured film rather than sinking in, so it can go onto materials that are completely non-absorbent. Second, because it hardens instantly it cannot spread, which is why fine type and hard edges hold up on a glossy panel where a solvent ink would creep.
That is the whole reason a flatbed exists. The material lies flat on a vacuum bed, the print head passes over it, and the sheet never has to bend around a roller. Anything rigid and reasonably flat is a candidate.
The alternative is a sticker, and you can usually tell
The other way to get a graphic onto a rigid panel is to print adhesive vinyl and laminate it down. That is a legitimate method and sometimes it is the right one — it is how you get a graphic onto a curved or textured surface, and it is how large runs of identical panels are often produced.
But direct UV printing gets you a few things the sticker does not. There is no film edge to lift at the corners, which is the failure mode of every laminated panel that lives outdoors or gets handled. There is no trapped bubble or silvering under the film. And on a clear substrate you can print on the second surface — ink on the back of the sheet, viewed through the acrylic — so the graphic is under a few millimeters of glass-like material and physically cannot be scratched by anything touching the front.
When we quote a panel and a vinyl-wrapped version comes in cheaper somewhere else, that difference is usually what you are giving up.
White ink is the part people forget
Regular CMYK inks are transparent. On white paper that is invisible as a problem, because the paper is doing the job of the white. On clear acrylic, brushed aluminum or a colored substrate, it is the whole problem: a cyan square printed straight onto clear acrylic is a translucent blue tint, not a solid color.
So the flatbed lays down white ink as a separate layer. Under the color, the graphic reads as it would on paper. Over the color, you get a second-surface print that looks correct when viewed from the front and is protected by the panel. Leave it out deliberately and you get a tinted, glassy effect that can be beautiful when it is intentional and looks like a mistake when it is not.
Tell us which you want. "Print it on clear acrylic" is not enough information to start, because the white layer is a decision about how the finished piece looks, not a technical detail we can make on your behalf.
Acrylic, Dibond and foam board — picking one
Three substrates cover most of what comes through the door, and the choice is mostly about where the panel lives and how long it needs to last.
[Acrylic printing](/products/acrylic-sign-printing-510) starts at $90. This is the interior option with presence. The thickness of the sheet, the polished edge and the shadow it casts off a standoff-mounted wall all read as substantial, and the gloss gives you saturation that no matte material matches. Lobby signage, wall art, the panel behind a reception desk, gallery-style pieces for a studio hallway. It scratches if you attack it, it is heavy at large sizes, and it wants good indoor light.
[Dibond aluminum](/products/dibond-aluminum-196) starts at $37.42. Two thin aluminum skins with a polyethylene core — rigid, flat, and it stays flat. It does not warp with humidity, it does not absorb water, and it survives a Valley summer outdoors. This is the default for building signage, parking and directional signs, real estate panels and anything that gets mounted to an exterior wall and then ignored for years. If the sign lives outside and is not a banner, the answer is usually this.
[Foam board](/products/foam-board-194) starts at $28.30. Light, cheap, easy to cut to shape, and temporary. Event signage, presentation boards, window displays, directional signs for a one-night opening. The core is foam, so a corner knock dents it permanently and rain destroys it. Nobody should be disappointed by that — it is the material doing what it costs.
The mistake we see most often is foam board specified for something that turned out to be permanent. A lobby sign on foam looks fine the day it goes up and looks tired in four months. If the panel is going to outlive the campaign, pay the difference at the start.
The other UV: raised spot gloss on paper
Now the second meaning. On a business card, spot UV is a clear gloss varnish applied to selected areas only — your logo, your name, a pattern — while the rest of the card stays matte. Raised spot UV builds that varnish up so you can feel it under a thumb. It is the same chemistry, cured the same way, doing a completely different job.
Raised spot UV business cards start at $64.67, and the default run is 50 pieces at $1.29 each. What they buy you is a tactile difference, not a visual one, so the design has to cooperate. The gloss shows against a matte background, which means a card that is glossy all over has nothing to contrast with. Hairline rules and 6pt type do not survive being built up in varnish — keep the raised elements chunky. And the effect works on a small percentage of the card; varnish everything and you have simply made a glossy card.
We need a separate one-color mask layer showing exactly where the varnish goes: solid black for varnish, white for none, aligned with your artwork. If you send a single flattened file and tell us "gloss on the logo," somebody has to build that mask, and it will not be as precise as if you built it yourself.
What to send us
For rigid panels, send vector artwork with fonts outlined, built at final size, and tell us the finished dimensions in inches including any bleed. Raster elements should be 300 ppi at print size for anything read from arm's length; a panel read from across a parking lot can be far lower without anybody noticing. Build in CMYK and expect a saturated color on brushed aluminum to land differently than it does on white acrylic — the substrate is part of the color.
Tell us the mounting method before we print. Standoffs need holes drilled in specific places and those holes need to miss your type. A panel that is going into a frame loses its outer edge to the retainer. Neither is a problem if we know first, and both are expensive to discover afterward.
