At a farmers market, a tasting or a hotel buffet, your table is the stand. And of the whole table only one part is actually read from across the room: the drop that hangs over the front edge. Everything lying flat on the top is seen at a raking angle by people already standing at your stall. These layouts put the name on the drop and keep the tabletop calm.

Trestle tables come in six-foot and eight-foot lengths, and a runner cut for one looks wrong on the other. A 24 × 72 inch runner lies down the middle of a six-foot table with the drop at each end; on an eight-foot table the same runner leaves a foot of bare wood at both ends and reads as a mistake. If your pitch changes from market to market, either buy for the longest table you will ever be given or buy a full throw that covers the lot.
The hem eats an inch. Every edge folds back on itself, so keep artwork two inches inside the cut line — a logo positioned to the edge of the file arrives half sewn into the seam, and there is no un-hemming it.
Fabric prints softer than vinyl, and that is fine
Nine-ounce polyester takes dye-sublimation ink into the fibre rather than laying it on top, so solids read a touch quieter than the same file on a vinyl banner and hairlines below a point close up. Design with weight instead of detail: a thick wordmark and one flat colour carry across a market aisle where a thin script disappears at ten feet.
If the table underneath is dark, or the runner has to sit over a stack of crates, order the blockout fabric. Standard polyester is slightly translucent, which is invisible in a lit hall and painfully obvious outdoors with the sun behind you.
What goes on the drop
The front panel has room for four things, and no more than four.
- The name, big enough to read from the far side of the aisle.
- What you sell, in three words — "Wood-fired sourdough", "Cold brew and pastry".
- One handle or website. Not three social icons.
- A QR code only if it goes somewhere useful on a phone with two bars of signal.
- Nothing in the outer two inches, which the hem folds away.

Questions we get asked
- Runner or full throw?
- A runner is cheaper, packs smaller and works where the table itself looks presentable. A full throw is what you want over a scuffed trestle, and it hides the boxes underneath — which at a market is most of the reason to buy one.
- Six-foot or eight-foot table?
- Measure the table you are actually given, not the one on the floor plan. Event organisers substitute freely, so if you work markets regularly, buy for the longer table and let the extra drape.
- Can it be washed after a service?
- Machine wash cold and hang to dry — printed polyester takes it. Do not iron directly on the print; press from the reverse with a cloth if it has creased in the crate.
- Will the table show through?
- Slightly, on standard fabric outdoors with light behind it. Order blockout if you work in daylight or if the design is light on a dark table.
