PVC Board in Los Angeles: Thickness, Heat Movement and Where It Beats Acrylic

Walk a commercial block anywhere in the Valley and a large share of the signs you pass are the same material: a flat white sheet, an eighth to a quarter inch thick, printed edge to edge and screwed to a wall or a fence. That is expanded PVC board, and it is the default rigid substrate in this trade for good reasons — it is waterproof, it takes ink beautifully, it cuts with a router, and it costs a fraction of acrylic or aluminum. We print and cut it at the shop on Lankershim for contractors, property managers, schools, clinics and every kind of storefront. The jobs that come back to us are almost never print problems. They are thickness chosen by price and mounting chosen by habit.
What PVC board actually is
Expanded PVC — you will also hear Sintra, Komatex, Celtec, or just "foam PVC" — is a closed-cell rigid plastic sheet. Closed-cell is the important half of that phrase. There is no paper facing and no absorbent core, so it does not wick water, delaminate in a sprinkler overspray, or go soft in a damp stairwell the way paper-faced foam core does. You can hose it off. You can leave it in the rain. It will still be flat.
It is also light and machinable in a way glass and metal are not. It drills without cracking, cuts clean on a table saw or CNC router, takes a screw directly, and can be cut to a contour shape rather than a rectangle. That combination — outdoor-durable, cheap, and cuttable into any outline — is why it ends up doing so many different jobs. Our PVC board starts at $30, which is why nobody agonizes over it the way they agonize over an acrylic order.
Thickness is a structural decision, not a price tier
Expanded PVC is sold in a ladder of thicknesses, typically from about 1 mm up to 19 mm, and the ones that matter for signage are 3 mm, 6 mm and 10 mm — roughly an eighth, a quarter and three-eighths of an inch. People treat that ladder as good, better, best. It is not. It is a span table.
3 mm is a facing material. It is right when the sheet is fully backed — glued or screwed flat to a wall, a door, a cabinet, an existing panel — or when it is small, under about two feet in any direction, and hanging indoors. Unsupported over a long span, it will bow. Not immediately, and not dramatically, but it will take a lazy curve and never come back.
6 mm is the workhorse. It holds itself flat across a normal storefront panel, survives being handled by one person on a ladder, and has enough edge to accept a screw or a standoff without crushing. If you are not sure, this is the one.
10 mm and up is for pieces that are structural: freestanding letters, thick dimensional shapes, panels that will be bumped by carts or people, or anything cantilevered off a bracket. It is also the thickness where the material starts reading as an object with depth rather than a printed sheet, which is a design reason, not just an engineering one.
The question to answer before ordering is not "how thick can I afford" but "what is holding this up, and how far apart are those points." Tell us the span and the mounting and the thickness picks itself.
The heat problem nobody designs for
This is the failure we see most often in Los Angeles, and it has nothing to do with print quality. Plastic moves with temperature far more than the wall behind it. Across a four-foot panel, a swing from a cool morning to a hot afternoon on a south-facing wall can move the sheet on the order of a sixteenth to a tenth of an inch. That is small until you have screwed the panel down tight at all four corners, at which point the sheet has nowhere to go and buckles between the fasteners. Every wavy sign you have seen on a sunlit wall is that mistake.
The fix is boring and free: drill the mounting holes oversize, at least a sixteenth larger than the screw shank, use a washer, and do not run the screws down tight. The panel should be held, not clamped. Give it room to breathe and it stays flat for years.
Two related realities. First, dark ink coverage gets dramatically hotter in direct sun than white does — a full-bleed black or deep navy panel on a west-facing wall in Sun Valley is a different thermal job than a mostly-white one, and it deserves more mounting points and more clearance. Second, a large panel bolted rigidly across the full width of a wall in July is the worst version of this; break long runs into two or three panels with a reveal between them rather than one continuous sheet.
Long-term, white expanded PVC in relentless UV will eventually chalk and shift slightly in tone. It is a multi-year process, not a season, and it matters mainly if you are adding a matching panel next to one that has been up for four years. Print the pair together if you can.
PVC versus acrylic — where each one belongs
These two get compared constantly and they are not really competitors. PVC is opaque, matte, light and cheap; acrylic is glossy, rigid, heavier, and reads as glass. The deciding factor is usually where the sign lives and how close the viewer stands to it.
For an exterior wall panel, a fence banner backer, a construction site notice, a directional sign, or anything that will be replaced when the promotion changes, PVC wins on cost and weight and nobody is examining the edge. For a lobby, a reception wall, a suite number, or a conference room — anywhere a client is standing three feet away — the polished edge and depth of acrylic is the whole point. Acrylic business signs start at $46.76 and are the standard answer for an office entry with standoffs. If the piece is a printed graphic where the material itself is meant to look like glass — a photographic panel, a menu board, a backlit-looking face — that is acrylic printing, from $90.
A useful pattern: PVC outside, acrylic inside. Spend the money where people are close enough to see the edge, and save it where they are not.
When a flat panel is the wrong product entirely
PVC board mounts to something. If you do not have a wall — a sidewalk, a lobby floor, a farmers market booth, a parking lot — you do not need a better panel, you need a stand. An A-frame sidewalk sign starts at $94.99, folds flat, moves indoors at close, and puts your message in the pedestrian path where a wall sign cannot reach. Buying a rigid panel and then improvising a way to prop it up is how signs end up zip-tied to a light pole.
Also check your city and landlord rules before you size anything for a storefront face. Panel dimensions, projection from the wall and total sign area are regulated, and it is far cheaper to find out at the planning stage than after fabrication. Getting the file right
Standard prep with a few substrate-specific notes. Build at final size with an eighth inch of bleed, keep text and logos at least a quarter inch inside the trim — more if the panel is getting screwed through the face — and supply vector with fonts outlined, or 300 dpi at final size. For a panel read from across a parking lot, resolution matters less than you think and contrast matters more.
If the piece is a contour cut rather than a rectangle, supply the cut path as a separate vector layer, and keep the outline chunky. Deep interior notches and fine spikes are fragile in a foamed sheet and will be the first thing to snap when someone carries the panel edge-on down a stairwell.
Tell us at the file stage where the mounting holes go. Holes drilled to a plan are cleaner, land in the right place relative to the artwork, and stop somebody putting a screw through the middle of your logo on site.
The Los Angeles part
Three local specifics. Sun exposure here is not a footnote — a west-facing wall in the Valley gets brutal afternoon sun for most of the year, which drives the mounting clearance above and argues for lighter ink coverage on the largest panels. Sprinklers are the second: landscape irrigation hits low-mounted panels every night, and PVC handles it fine while the paper-faced substrates people substitute for it do not. Third, wind. Panels on fences and open frames catch the same afternoon gusts that come through the passes; if the sign is not against a solid wall, it needs more fasteners than feel necessary and a thicker sheet than the span alone would suggest.
