
Most people who come to us asking about UV printing were told they needed it by somebody else — a designer, a landlord's tenant improvement packet, a booth vendor at a trade show. What rarely comes with that instruction is an explanation of what the machine does differently from every other press in the building, and which of your jobs it is genuinely the right answer for.
We run UV printing at the shop in Sun Valley, a straight run east of Northridge across the Valley, and we print a steady stream of work for offices along Nordhoff and Reseda, retail near the Fashion Center, CSUN departments and the contractors and clinics in between. What the UV part actually means
Conventional ink either soaks into paper or evaporates its solvent into the air. UV ink does neither. It is a liquid that turns solid the instant it passes under ultraviolet lamps on the print head carriage — cured, not dried, in the fraction of a second between being laid down and moving on.
Three consequences follow from that, and everything else in this article is downstream of them. The ink does not need a porous surface to grab, so it will print on acrylic, aluminum, PVC, glass, wood and coated board. There is no dry time, so a printed panel comes off the table finished and can be cut, drilled and handled immediately. And because the ink hardens in place instead of spreading, it can be built up — layer on layer, white underneath color, clear varnish on top.
Flat and rigid is the whole point
The flatbed is a table. Sheet material lies on it, held by vacuum, and the head passes over it. Nothing bends, nothing rolls, nothing is mounted afterward.
That last part is the difference people feel and cannot name. The old way to get a graphic onto a rigid panel was to print it on adhesive vinyl and laminate that vinyl onto the board — a second operation, with its own bubbles, its own lifting edges after a summer, and a visible seam where two widths meet on anything wide. Printing straight to the substrate removes the whole step. The image is in the material's surface, and the edge of the panel is just a cut edge.
It also means that whatever texture the material has stays part of the image. Brushed aluminum reads as brushed aluminum through the ink. Clear acrylic stays clear everywhere you did not put ink.
White ink, and printing on the back of clear acrylic
On paper, white is the paper. On a clear or metallic substrate there is no white unless the press lays one down, which is why UV presses carry white as its own channel.
This gives you a real design decision on clear panels. Print white behind your artwork and the colors come out opaque and correct, the way they look on screen. Leave the white out and the wall, the window or the metal shows through the ink — a logo on clear acrylic with no white behind it becomes a tinted, ghosted mark that changes with whatever is behind it. Both are legitimate; they are just different objects.
For a lobby or conference room panel we usually print acrylic signage, from $90, on the back of the sheet, so the acrylic itself sits over the image like glass. The color gains depth, the ink is protected from fingerprints and cleaning sprays forever, and the standoffs throw a shadow that makes the panel read as an installed fixture rather than something taped up. Send us the file the right way round — we mirror it for second-surface work, and a file that arrives pre-mirrored comes out backwards.
Aluminum composite for anything that lives outside
Dibond aluminum starts at $37.42 and is the panel we reach for whenever a sign is going on a building, a fence or a post. It is two thin aluminum skins bonded to a polyethylene core, so it is light for its stiffness and it stays genuinely flat at sizes where a single sheet of metal would start to ripple in the sun.
That flatness matters more in Northridge than people expect. A west-facing wall on Devonshire takes full afternoon sun through a Valley summer, and the difference between a panel that still looks sharp in October and one that has gone wavy is usually the substrate, not the print. Aluminum composite also takes wind loading without drumming, which is worth knowing if your sign is high on a wall or standing free in a lot.
Directional and parking signage, suite and building identification, monument faces, equipment and safety panels — these are all the same material with different copy on them.
Foam board is an indoor, short-horizon material
Foam board starts at $28.30 and is the opposite bet: light, cheap, rigid enough to stand on an easel, and printed beautifully because the surface is smooth and takes fine detail.
It belongs indoors and it belongs to jobs with a known end date. Research posters and defense presentations, event and conference signage, sales-floor displays, real estate and staging boards, a directory at a one-day fair. What it will not survive is rain, or a hot car trunk, or being stood outside a storefront — heat warps it and any knock crushes a corner permanently. If someone is quoting you foam board for an exterior sign, they are quoting the wrong material.
Raised spot UV is a texture, not a color
The same instant curing that lets the press build white under an image lets it build clear varnish over one. Multiple passes of clear ink in the same place stack up into a ridge you can feel with a thumbnail — glossy, slightly domed, sitting proud of the card.
Raised spot UV business cards start at $64.67, and the default run of 50 works out to $1.29 each. The effect only exists because of contrast, so it works hardest on a dark or matte stock where the gloss catches light against a surface that does not.
The design rule is restraint. Pick one element — the mark, the name, a single rule — and leave everything else flat. Varnish over the whole card is just a gloss card. And remember that the ridge has a physical width to it: hairline strokes and very small type lose the effect, because there is not enough area for the varnish to build. Send the spot layer as its own vector layer, solid black, exactly aligned to the artwork underneath, and tell us which layer is which.
What to send
Vector artwork with the fonts outlined, built at final size, with bleed all round. CMYK, not RGB — the conversion happens either way, and doing it yourself means you see the shift before we do rather than after. Photographic content should land somewhere around 150 ppi at final size for a wall panel read from across a room; a card is a different standard entirely and wants the full resolution.
Tell us how the piece is mounted before layout is final, not after. Standoff holes, a Z-clip channel, a frame rail or a drilled corner all eat a specific band of the panel, and copy that runs into that band has to move. Same with any element that must be a particular size on the wall — give us the measurement rather than a scale factor.
Picking between them
Interior, permanent, wants to look expensive. Acrylic, printed second surface, on standoffs. Lobby walls, conference rooms, suite identification inside an office building.
Exterior, or anywhere it gets weather and sun. Dibond aluminum composite. Building signs, directionals, parking, site panels.
Indoor, temporary, needs to be light and cheap. Foam board. Events, presentations, displays, anything with a date on it.
Something you hand a person. Raised spot UV cards, where the point is what the recipient's fingers notice before they read a word.
