UV Printing in Van Nuys: What Gets Printed Directly Onto the Material, and What Doesn't

Van Nuys is about ten minutes up the road from our shop, and a fair share of the work that comes through our door starts on Van Nuys Blvd, in the industrial blocks around the airport, or in one of the office suites near the Civic Center. The job is usually described the same way: something printed on a hard panel, not on paper. That is UV printing, and it is worth understanding what the process actually does before you pick a material, because on a flatbed the material is not a detail — it is most of the decision.
We do UV printing at 8511 Lankershim Blvd in Sun Valley, and we serve Van Nuys along with the rest of the east Valley. This is what we walk people through.
What the "UV" in UV printing is doing
Conventional printing puts wet ink on a surface and waits — the ink soaks into paper fibers or the solvent evaporates. UV printing does neither. The heads lay ink down and a UV lamp travelling with them cures it on contact, so the ink turns solid before it has time to spread, sink or run.
Two consequences follow from that, and they are the whole reason the process exists.
The material does not have to absorb anything. Aluminum, acrylic, PVC, foam, glass, wood, coated metal — if it is flat and it fits on the bed, it can be printed. There is no transfer step, no adhesive vinyl applied to a panel, no laminate sandwich. The graphic is on the panel.
The ink sits on top rather than in. That gives you density and saturation that a porous surface will not, and it also means adhesion is a physical question about the specific substrate, not a given. On some materials the cured ink bonds hard. On others — bare glossy metals, certain plastics, anything with a release coating or a silicone residue — it will pass a fingernail test and fail a real one. If you are bringing your own material to us, say what it is, and expect us to want to test a corner first.
The substrate is where the money and the look both live
Most Van Nuys jobs land on one of four things, and they are not interchangeable.
Dibond is two thin aluminum skins bonded to a polyethylene core. It is rigid, flat, and it stays flat — which matters more than people expect, because a warped sign reads as cheap from across a parking lot even if the print is perfect. Dibond aluminum starts at $37.42, and it is what we point people to for exterior building signage, parking and property signs, and anything that needs to survive a Valley summer bolted to a wall.
Acrylic is the one that photographs well. Printing under or onto acrylic gives you gloss and depth that no matte panel produces, because you are looking at color through a clear layer with real thickness. Acrylic printing starts at $90 and belongs on reception walls, showroom pieces, interior menu and feature panels — places where someone will stand three feet from it.
Foam board is light, cheap and temporary by design. Foam board starts at $28.30 and is right for a presentation, a trade show, an event, a window display, a mock-up you want to see at full size before committing to metal. It is not right for outdoors and it is not right for anything that gets handled repeatedly — the edges crush and the corners take a knock and never recover.
A useful way to sort it: if it goes outside, Dibond. If people will look at it closely indoors, acrylic. If it only has to exist for a week, foam board. The print itself is the same process on all three; what changes is how long it stays looking like it did on day one.
White ink, and the decision you have to make before we print
On paper, white is the paper. On a flatbed, white is an ink, and it has to be laid down deliberately.
This matters the moment your substrate is not white. On clear acrylic, on brushed or black material, on anything transparent, your artwork has to be told whether it wants white behind it. Print CMYK straight onto clear acrylic with no white and you get a translucent, washed-out graphic that takes on whatever is behind it. Print a white underbase first and the colors sit on their own opaque ground and behave like they do on paper.
You may also want white as a color — a white logo on a dark panel, white type over a photograph, or a partial underbase that leaves some areas deliberately clear so the material shows through. All three are normal. All three need to be separated properly in the file, not guessed at from a flat JPEG.
So when you send artwork for anything that is not a plain white sheet, tell us in plain language what you want the material to do: show through, disappear behind white, or show through in specific places only. That one sentence prevents most of the reprints we see on clear and metal substrates.
Outdoors in the Valley
UV-cured ink is more resistant to fading than most people assume, but "more resistant" is not "permanent," and a south-facing panel on Van Nuys Blvd gets a serious dose of sun. Two things shorten the life of an exterior print more than anything else.
Heavy saturated color, particularly reds and deep blues. These shift first. A sign built on strong flat color will visibly age before a sign built on darker, more neutral tones. If your brand color is a bright red and the sign lives in full afternoon sun, that is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering in year two.
Edges and mounting points. Failures tend to start where the panel is drilled, cut or clamped, not in the middle of the graphic. Keep critical artwork away from the fixing holes, and if you already know how the panel is going up — standoffs, cleat, screwed flat to stucco — tell us, because we can place the holes before printing instead of you drilling through a finished face.
The other thing people mean by UV
Search for UV printing and you will also hit spot UV, which is a different job entirely: a clear, raised gloss varnish applied to selected areas of a printed piece. It is not a flatbed sign process, it is a finish on a card.
Raised spot UV business cards start at $64.67 for the default run of 50 at $1.29 each. The effect is tactile — a logo, a name, a pattern, or a rule that you feel with a thumb before you register it visually — and it works best with restraint. Gloss on everything is just a glossy card. Gloss on one element against a matte field is the whole point. Build the spot UV as a separate layer in the file, in solid black, showing exactly where the varnish goes.
Files, briefly
Vector artwork, fonts outlined, built at final size or at a clean fraction with the ratio stated. CMYK, not RGB — and accept that a screen-bright color will come back a step calmer on a physical panel. Raster elements at 300 ppi if the piece is read from arm's length; considerably less is fine for a sign read from a moving car, where a photo that would be unusable on a card looks perfectly sharp at twenty feet.
Give us the finished panel dimensions in inches, mark any holes or cutouts, and separate white-ink and spot-UV layers rather than describing them in an email. If you are not sure how to build those layers, send what you have and we will tell you what is missing before anything goes on the bed.
