The sign beside the till has a shorter job than any other piece of print in the shop. It is read by someone already holding a wallet, from about eighteen inches, for maybe three seconds, while they wait for a card terminal. One message fits in that window. These layouts are drawn around that constraint instead of fighting it.

Counter displays fail by accumulation. A shop prints one for the loyalty scheme, then adds the care instructions, then the new opening hours, then a QR code, and ends up with a laminated noticeboard that customers have learned to look past. The fix is mechanical: one panel says one thing, and when there is a second thing there is a second panel.
That is also the cheap way to keep a counter looking current. A single 8.5 × 11 inch panel is the price of a couple of bunches of flowers, so a shop can run four of them a year — spring arrivals, a summer offer, the holiday deadline, the January clearance — and never have anything on the counter that is out of date.
Rigid, because the counter is a hostile place
These print direct to eighth-inch white PVC or three-sixteenths white foam on the flatbed, with a White underbase laid down before the colour. That matters at a till: card stock curls in the first week, absorbs a spilled coffee on the second, and looks apologetic by the third. A rigid panel stands up to being knocked over and wiped down, and PVC survives a florist's counter where everything is permanently slightly wet.
The easel foot is taped to the back, so the face is untouched but the panel leans a few degrees. Keep hairline type away from the bottom edge, where the lean shortens it visually, and set prices in numerals large enough to read past a queue.
What earns a spot on the counter
Ranked by what shopkeepers actually reorder.
- The offer with a number in it — a price, a percentage or a deadline.
- Care instructions for anything that will be blamed on you later: cut flowers, candles, leather.
- The loyalty or referral scheme, with the one sentence that explains how to join.
- Payment and returns policy, so the conversation happens before the card is out.
- A QR code to the online shop, at least three-quarters of an inch square and unobstructed.
- Nothing seasonal that outlives its season. Print another one; they are cheap.

Priced per piece at the size you pick, so a second panel for a second till is a second line on the order rather than a new setup.

Questions we get asked
- What size sits well on a checkout counter?
- 8.5 × 11 or 9 × 12 inches. Below that it is lost among the impulse buys; above it, the customer cannot see the till and the staff start moving it out of the way — which is how signs end up on the floor behind the counter.
- Is the back printed too?
- No. The easel foot is mounted on the reverse, so these are single-sided. If both faces have to be read — an island counter, a table in the middle of the room — order a tent card instead.
- PVC or foam?
- PVC where there is water: florists, food counters, anywhere that gets wiped down. Foam is lighter and slightly cheaper, and it is fine on a dry counter that gets a new sign every season anyway.
- Can I reuse one panel and just change the price?
- Not on a printed panel — the colour is cured onto the substrate. What works is designing the panel without the number and clipping a small printed price card to it, or reprinting the panel, which at these quantities costs less than the time spent arguing about it.
