Business Card Size: Measurements and File Setup

Business Card Size: Measurements and File Setup

The standard US business card size is 3.5 x 2 inches, or 88.9 x 50.8 millimetres, measured at the finished edge. That's the card you receive. Your artwork may need extra space beyond those edges for bleed, so the finished measurements alone don't tell you how large to make the file.

How big is a business card in inches?

A standard horizontal business card is 3.5 inches wide by 2 inches tall. Turn it upright for a vertical design: 2 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall. The finished rectangle stays the same. What changes is how you arrange your logo and contact details.

Angels Print lists this size for Classic Business Cards, Clear Plastic Business Cards, Die Cut Business Cards and Double Thick Duplex Cards. Select it before building your layout. A product's starting selection may use different dimensions, even when the standard format is available.

Which business card size should you choose?

Start with what needs to fit. The standard 3.5 x 2-inch rectangle gives you a familiar format for your name and business contact details. Check the layout at actual size. Text that looks spacious on an enlarged screen can feel crowded or read too small in print.

3.35 x 2 inches is not the same as 3.35 x 2.16 inches. Classic and Clear Plastic Business Cards list the latter option, which is narrower and taller than the standard US rectangle. Don't round the measurements. Use the exact selected dimensions in your document.

2 x 2 inches is a listed size for square and circle shapes on Classic Business Cards. The outside measurements match; the usable space doesn't. A circle loses the corners available on a square, so position contact details comfortably inside its outline.

Classic, Die Cut and Double Thick Duplex Cards also list Custom Size. Check dimensions and compatible combinations in the configurator. Clear Plastic Cards list two named sizes; ask about other measurements before preparing artwork. For more on finished edges, read What Size Is a Business Card? Trim and Artwork.

What size should a complementary card be?

If you searched for complementary card size and mean a business or contact card, the standard US starting point is 3.5 x 2 inches. Confirm what the card will do. That wording alone doesn't identify a separate set of dimensions.

A thank-you or complimentary insert enclosed with an order may need room for a longer message. Choose the finished size around that use. A template labelled “complementary card” doesn't necessarily use standard business card measurements.

Does a thicker business card need a larger size?

Thickness doesn't determine face dimensions. All four products covered here list 3.5 x 2 inches, letting you keep the standard size while changing material or construction.

Classic Business Cards offer 14PT and 16PT coated stocks, plus uncoated cover and Classic Crest options. Finish choices depend on the stock. Listed options include glossy, dull matte and UV high-gloss, with Front Only or Front and Back printing available in compatible configurations.

Clear Plastic Business Cards list 30PT clear, frosted and white plastic, with Front Only printing and 1/8-inch rounded corners. Plan for one printed face. A two-sided layout won't match that printing option.

Double Thick Duplex Cards include 28PT coated cover in two layers and 24PT uncoated options. Their default dimensions are 4 x 6 inches, although 3.5 x 2 inches is available. Change that selection before preparing business card artwork.

How do custom shapes and rounded corners affect the layout?

Die Cut Business Cards list Custom Shape, a 3.5 x 2-inch size and a Custom Size option. The outline determines usable space. Outside measurements alone won't show where your text will fit, so confirm the shape and artwork requirements before positioning details.

Classic and Double Thick Duplex Cards list 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch corner options, subject to configuration. Give those corners some room. Rounding can remove space used by a square-corner layout, and small trim variations can make thin borders appear uneven.

What changes the price besides business card size?

Compare the complete configuration. Quantity and stock affect the comparison, along with printed sides and finishing. Die Cut Cards list foil and raised spot UV options; Double Thick Duplex Cards also list painted edges. Availability depends on your selections.

Catalogue starting prices are Classic Business Cards from $1000.00, Clear Plastic Business Cards from $1000.32, Die Cut Business Cards from $1000.10 and Double Thick Duplex Cards from $1000.46. These cover different default runs. They aren't matched quotes for the same quantity, size and finish.

Select the quantity you actually need. Then choose your options to see the final price at checkout. For help comparing materials, read Business Card Printing in Panorama City: Stocks, Finishes & What to Choose.

What size should your artwork file be?

Separate trim, bleed and safe area. Trim is the intended finished edge; bleed is artwork extending beyond it where required. The safe area keeps text and logos inward from the cut. A 3.5 x 2-inch listing establishes finished dimensions, not the full artwork size.

Read the requirements beside the artwork upload for your selected product. Follow its accepted file types and specified bleed and safe area. Missing a measurement? Ask Angels Print before creating the file. A print-ready PDF can be useful, but one setup won't necessarily suit every material or custom shape.

Extend edge-reaching backgrounds into the required bleed, keeping contact details inside the specified safe area. Check raster images at final size. Enlarging a small logo can reveal softness that wasn't obvious in the original.

Match files to the selected printed sides. Classic, Die Cut and Double Thick Duplex Cards list Front Only and Front and Back printing. Clear Plastic Cards list Front Only. Preparing a back design doesn't add back printing to the order.

What should you check before ordering?

Compare your artwork with the selected size, orientation, shape and printed sides. Recheck after any configuration change. Pay particular attention to the 4 x 6-inch default on Double Thick Duplex Cards. An attractive preview doesn't confirm production readiness or correct a size mismatch.

Check spelling and contact details before payment. A digital proof by email is available on request, but manufacturing starts immediately after payment. Need to review a proof first? Discuss that with Angels Print before paying. Screen colours may not exactly match the printed result.
